trying to save $$ in the home renovations?
i am trying to get some feed back on these ideas to save a few hundred bucks.
1) has anyone ever painted their laminate counter tops?
2) i have a carpet in good condition (no stains etc) could i just get a higher quality carpet pad to put under it?
3) does anyone have High Density (high end) laminate or have you ever seen it? what did you think?
4) what product can i use to protect a painted surface?

for #1 - I want the carpet to feel more plush.
for #3 - if i cant paint the countertops i will need to replace them. Granite will cost me $4000 total so i am investigated other materials. Laminate of course is cheap and ugly but i recall hearing on HGTV that there are high end laminates that look like granite. has anyone ever seen this?

1. You can paint a laminate counter top, but it looks really cheap. It also wears out really fast. Be sure to abrade the surface before painting and make sure that the people who will eat food prepared in your kitchen do not mind paint chips in their food.
2.That is a lot of work to replace the carpet pad(it is wall to wall I assume) for a modest improvement in the feel. You should still hire installers to do the work and they will charge as much for labor as if they put in a new carpet and pad. There could also be some joint problems depending on the quality of the seams put in by the original installers. If the carpet gets damaged in the process, you are unlikely to find any carpet to make a patch.
4. There are some clear coat products to paint on top of a painted surface. You can also cover a table or counter with a clear acrylic plastic sheet. I could provide more information if I knew more about the paint and what you are protecting it from.
