25 with lower back pain?
I'm 25 years old. Not too heavy set but a few extra pounds. I'm a stout guy. anyway I've been having this lower back pain just above my butt. It feels more like pressure. It hurts so bad sometimes that it's hard to breath and i definitely can't move. The pain only lasts for a minute or so then goes away but the aches do stay for a little bit. I try and stand/sit up straight as much as possible but it seams the more i do it the more pain. I'm pretty sure it has to do with my bed. I've the temporpedic memory foam mattress. Well I'm a stomach sleeper and this puts an incredible arch in my back while i sleep but i just want to know if it may be something else?! would could be causing this pain?
~ Hi ~ It could very well be the bed if your stomach sleeper. I think those beds a really designed for back or side sleeping. That doesn't sound good - it sounds like your spine is likely contorting in your sleep and that could be putting immense pressure on your discs. I would really recommend that you train yourself to either sleep on your side or sleep on your back. (I tended to be a stomach sleeper and with my spinal issues I had to train myself to be a back). I can tell you how I did it: It was easier to train myself to sleep on my side and I used two body pillows - one behind and one to hug. It was actually surprisingly quick that I became a side sleeper and then I found I started to sleep on my back which is optimum. Also, if you're really experiencing severe lower back pain, you can purchase a pillow that you use when you go to bed and it goes under your legs, so your legs are slightly elevated while you sleep. This will probably feel very awkward and may not be the best solution if it keeps you from sleeping, but it will take pressure off your spine.
If you don't remember lifting something that injured your back or injuring your back in another way, it could be the bed. Sometimes we don't realize when we injure ourselves, it could be a simple yard work or house work and bending weird. However, if the pain continues I do recommend seeing a Doctor just to have your Discs checked - an X-Ray will show if your Disc has collapsed an MRI would show injuries with the soft tissue - like a herniation.
At night you can also try a hot water bottle or heat pad, which will help to give you relief and help with any spasms you're having. Ibuprofen is helpful to reduce inflammation.
