Anyone experienced with venting a pellet furnace through its own liner in a chimney flue shared w/gas or oil?
What I want to do is install a Harmon pellet furnace in the basement of our single family house and vent the furnace through an adjacent, existing brick chimney. The Harmon furnace has a maximum BTU output of 112,000 per hour. The glitch is we already use that flu to vent our h2o heater (gas) and the back-up furnace (oil). The backup furnace is needed since the pellet furnace is not continuous feeding...once the bag of pellets is gone, no more heat.
Our building inspectors have no experience with this, nor is there anything in the city building codes. So they aren't very helpful.
Has anyone vented a pellet furnace this way? Is installing a dedicated stainless steel liner a safe way to separate the gas/oil exhaust which would also be in the flu (but in a separate liner)?

typically a chimney already used to vent your furnace is not adequate for venting a pellet stove. Although there are some circumstances where a chimney is oversized and a seperately lined area of the chimney may be adequate for venting (not very common).
Call your pellet stove manufacturer - they will tell you its not recommended and actually against building code.
First off a central furnace to heat a house is required by building code- not local building code but by BOCA which is the building code of america - and by their standards a house thats liveable as a permanant residence has to have a central heating supply that has to be self igniting without having to load it (which for a pellet stove you would have to load pellets). So if you would like to have a pellet burning furnace - its actually against building code. But it is within building code to have it as a ADD ON to the furnace, as example its perfectly legal to use it for another means of getting heat but you would still have to leave your oil furnace in place.
So like i said you can not share the same chimney - but you can add on a chimney or other means of venting it.....I am really not sure why your building inspector would not know of the country wide codes - i work in construction and have met some stupid inspectors but ..well contact your local fire department because in many towns the fire marshall is in charge of inspecting fireplaces/stoves, and they can tell you quickly what is exceptable and not exceptable in your area. depending on where you live - the fire marshall would probley be able to take a hands on look at your house and give ya a good educated opinion on how about to go about venting this furnace.
